Join us on Saturday, July 31, 2010 for another leg of the Bay Area Ridge Trail! This section begins at Fort Funston at the hang glider observation deck (South of the SF Zoo), then proceeds North along Lake Merced before climbing into the Twin Peaks neighborhood. After we scale Mt. Olympus (the geographical center of the City, with great views if there is no fog), we descend to the Presidio for the last leg. We pass through many neighborhoods you may not have seen, including West Portal, Stern Grove, Pine Lake Park, Buena Vista Park, the Panhandle, and the Presidio, all the way to the Golden Gate Bridge toll plaza, where we descend to Fort Point. It is about 14 miles (according to our GPS), but not a great deal of elevation gain.
This is a one-way hike, and requires a car shuttle. Please meet at the Old Library in Orinda, ready to leave by 8:00 AM. Steve will have the sign-in sheets there. We will all park at Fort Point, then half of the cars (and all of the hikers) will drive to the trailhead at Fort Funston. Important: DO NOT CARPOOL FROM ORINDA: you need empty space in your car so that we can get everyone to the trailhead, and back to the trailhead at the end of the hike. Also, it would help if someone reserved a couple of seats for the two leaders :-) If there are not enough seats, there will be a one-hour delay while hikers make their way to the trailhead by public transportation (bus -> metro -> bus), and another hour at the end before you can go home.
If you are going to meet us at the trail, meet us at Fort Point: if you drive directly to the trailhead, we may not have saved enough seats to bring you back at the end of the hike.
Due to construction on Doyle Dr., we are going to suggest that you NOT follow the directions that Google Maps will give you. Instead, from Lombard St., turn right on Filmore St., and left on Marina Blvd. Marina Blvd will become Mason. Follow Mason to Hamilton, turn left on Hamilton, then right on Long Ave., then left on Marine Dr. Marine Dr. will eventually dead-end in a parking lot, with a barrier at the far end. Park as close to the barrier as you can, and look for people in hiking garb :-)
Come and enjoy!
